Lesson 1 — Symbols Shape Reality

Key Idea

We don’t only react to facts.
We react to symbols, stories, and images.

Understanding symbols helps us understand:
what feels true
what spreads online
how beliefs form

The Three Symbolic Forms

Language

Facts, statements, explanations
Example: “Homework is due tomorrow.”

Myth

Stories that shape belief or identity
Example: “If you believe it, anything is possible.”

Art

Images, music, style, vibe
Example: TikTok music + filters + mood

Most digital content mixes all three.

Symbol Triangle

        MYTH
      (story)
  ART ------- LANGUAGE
(image) (claim)

Ask yourself when scrolling:

  • What is being said?
  • What story is implied?
  • What feeling is created?

Mini Reflection

Think of one post you saw recently.

  1. What was the message?
  2. What feeling did it create?
  3. Was it mostly language, myth, or art?
