Category Drift: When One Kind of Meaning Impersonates Another
Not all nonsense begins with a false fact.
A sentence may contain accurate information, a useful metaphor, a genuine feeling or an interesting hypothesis and still collapse into nonsense. The failure occurs when the statement moves from one category of meaning to another without marking or justifying the transition.
Memecraft calls this category drift.
Category drift occurs when a claim begins in one register—metaphorical, statistical, experiential, scientific, moral, symbolic or speculative—and quietly begins speaking with the authority of another.
The transition may be small enough to pass unnoticed:
- a metaphor begins to sound like a physical mechanism;
- an association becomes a cause;
- a model becomes the reality it represents;
- a feeling becomes evidence;
- a possibility becomes an established fact;
- a spiritual interpretation becomes a scientific conclusion;
- a description of what is becomes a command about what ought to be;
- fluent language begins to impersonate understanding.
The problem is not that these categories must remain isolated. Human understanding depends on movement between them. Metaphor can inspire scientific inquiry. Experience can reveal questions that measurement has overlooked. Statistical patterns can suggest causal hypotheses. Stories can disclose ethical consequences that data alone cannot show.
The problem begins when the crossing is concealed.
A responsible transition says:
This is a metaphor that may help us imagine the process.
These variables are associated, but the evidence does not yet establish causation.
This model simplifies reality for a particular purpose.
This experience matters to me, but it does not by itself prove a general claim.
Category drift removes these markers. It carries the authority earned in one category into another category where that authority has not been earned.
Category Drift Is Not Merely Error
An ordinary factual error can often be corrected by replacing one fact with another.
Category drift is more difficult because every individual sentence may sound plausible. The nonsense lies in the relation between the sentences.
Consider:
People who use social media more frequently report higher levels of anxiety. Social media therefore causes anxiety. Because platforms alter the brain, users are losing their capacity for free choice.
Three different movements have occurred:
- A reported association has become a causal conclusion.
- A broad statement about behavioural or neural change has been introduced without specifying a mechanism.
- A claim about influence has become a philosophical conclusion about free will.
The final argument may feel coherent because each sentence prepares the rhetoric of the next. But the evidential relation has not kept pace with the language.
Category drift is therefore a relational failure. MoMo does not only examine whether each statement is separately true. It asks whether the movement between statements is warranted.
Common Forms of Category Drift
1. Metaphor Becomes Mechanism
Claim:
The algorithm knows what you want before you do.
Possible signal:
Recommendation systems can predict some user behaviour from previous data and patterns across many users.
The drift:
“Knows” begins as an accessible metaphor for prediction but starts implying consciousness, understanding or privileged access to the person’s inner life.
More careful formulation:
The system can sometimes predict what a user will click more accurately than the user expects, but prediction is not the same as conscious knowledge or understanding.
The metaphor is not useless. It becomes nonsense only when its metaphorical status disappears.
2. Correlation Becomes Cause
Claim:
Teenagers who spend more time online are more depressed, so social media causes depression.
Possible signal:
Online activity and reported distress may be statistically associated in some populations or contexts.
The drift:
An association is treated as proof of one-directional causation. Other possibilities disappear:
- distressed teenagers may use social media differently or more frequently;
- sleep, family conditions or social isolation may influence both;
- particular kinds of online activity may matter more than total time;
- the causal relation may operate in both directions.
More careful formulation:
Some research finds an association between particular patterns of social-media use and reported distress, but the direction, size and causes of that relation require further investigation.
Category awareness does not weaken the claim. It places the claim at the level the evidence can carry.
3. Model Becomes Reality
Claim:
The personality test shows that she is an introvert.
Possible signal:
The test has classified her responses according to a model that includes an introversion dimension.
The drift:
A result produced within a measurement framework becomes a complete statement about the person.
More careful formulation:
Her answers placed her towards the introverted end of this test’s scale. That may describe some tendencies, but it does not exhaust her personality or predict every situation.
A model makes selected features visible. It does not become the whole person or world.
4. Feeling Becomes Evidence
Claim:
This explanation resonates deeply with me, so it must be true.
Possible signal:
The explanation has touched a meaningful experience, fear, hope, memory or pattern.
The drift:
Experiential importance becomes factual verification.
More careful formulation:
The explanation resonates with me, which tells me it deserves attention. I still need to ask what evidence supports it and whether other explanations fit the experience.
Resonance gives a symbol weight.
It does not give the symbol truth.
But neither should resonance simply be dismissed. It may reveal the question that requires investigation.
5. Possibility Becomes Fact
Claim:
The politician may have supported the policy to benefit a donor. That is why the policy was introduced.
Possible signal:
There may be a relevant relationship, incentive or conflict of interest worth examining.
The drift:
A hypothesis about motive becomes a settled account of motive.
More careful formulation:
The donor relationship raises a question about possible influence, but additional evidence is needed before attributing the politician’s motive.
Words such as may, possibly and could often disappear as a claim circulates. The hypothesis survives, but its uncertainty does not.
6. Description Becomes Prescription
Claim:
Competition occurs throughout nature, so society should reward the strongest and allow the weak to fail.
Possible signal:
Competition is one observable relation within biological and social life.
The drift:
A description of some natural processes becomes a moral rule for organising society.
The statement also excludes cooperation, mutual dependence, care and symbiosis, which are equally present in living systems.
More careful formulation:
Competition is one feature of life, but scientific descriptions of nature do not by themselves determine which social values or institutions we ought to choose.
Facts can inform ethical judgment. They cannot silently replace it.
7. Symbolic or Spiritual Language Becomes Scientific Proof
Claim:
We are all connected, and quantum physics proves that consciousness creates reality.
Possible signal:
The statement may express a meaningful spiritual intuition about relation, participation or unity.
The drift:
A metaphysical or symbolic interpretation borrows the authority of physics without demonstrating that the scientific theory supports the conclusion.
More careful formulation:
The experience of interconnectedness may support a spiritual or metaphysical interpretation. Quantum physics raises difficult questions about observation and physical systems, but it does not by itself establish that human consciousness creates all reality.
The spiritual claim may remain meaningful. It should not have to impersonate a laboratory conclusion to deserve discussion.
8. Statistical Average Becomes an Individual Destiny
Claim:
Members of this group score lower on average, so this student is unlikely to succeed.
Possible signal:
A measured group difference may exist within a particular dataset.
The drift:
A population-level statistic is converted into a confident prediction about one individual.
More careful formulation:
A group average describes a distribution under particular conditions. It does not determine the ability, circumstances or future of an individual member.
This category drift is especially dangerous because it can turn descriptive statistics into institutional expectations that help produce the outcome they claim merely to predict.
9. Fluency Becomes Understanding
Claim:
The AI gave a clear, detailed answer with references, so it understands the subject.
Possible signal:
The output may be useful, well structured and partly or fully accurate.
The drift:
The linguistic appearance of understanding becomes evidence of lived comprehension, warranted authority or responsibility.
More careful formulation:
The system produced a fluent answer. Its claims, sources and reasoning still need to be examined. Fluency alone does not establish understanding or truth.
This is synthetic authority: symbolic form carrying more authority than its grounding warrants.
10. Story Becomes Explanation
Claim:
The company failed because its founder became arrogant.
Possible signal:
Leadership behaviour may have contributed to poor decisions or organisational conflict.
The drift:
A compelling character narrative replaces a complex causal explanation involving markets, financing, product quality, timing, governance and competition.
More careful formulation:
The founder’s behaviour may have been one factor, but the failure requires a broader account of the organisational, economic and strategic conditions.
Stories organise events into memorable meaning. That does not automatically make them adequate explanations.
Compound Category Drift
In practice, category drift often occurs in chains.
Consider:
Artificial intelligence is learning to think like us. It will soon become conscious. Once it is conscious, it will want freedom. We therefore need to give advanced AI legal rights now.
The chain moves through several categories:
- Performance metaphor: “thinking like us.”
- Prediction: it will soon become conscious.
- Attribution of desire: it will want freedom.
- Ethical and legal prescription: it should receive rights now.
Every step may raise a legitimate question. But the final conclusion receives rhetorical force from transitions that have not been established.
A category-aware revision might say:
Current AI systems can reproduce some linguistic and problem-solving performances associated with human thought. Whether such systems are or could become conscious remains unresolved. Questions about moral and legal status should therefore distinguish present capabilities, future hypotheses, theories of consciousness and ethical precaution.
The revision does not eliminate imagination. It prevents imagination from presenting itself as established fact.
Detecting Category Drift
A learner can use five questions:
1. What kind of statement is this?
Is it:
- an observation;
- a measured finding;
- an interpretation;
- a metaphor;
- a causal explanation;
- a prediction;
- a moral judgment;
- a spiritual or metaphysical claim;
- a story?
2. Does the category change?
Where does the statement move from one kind of claim to another?
3. Is the transition marked?
Does the writer say may suggest, could mean, as a metaphor, one interpretation is, or the evidence supports?
4. What additional support would the new category require?
A causal claim requires more than an association.
A general conclusion requires more than one example.
A scientific mechanism requires more than a metaphor.
A moral prescription requires an ethical argument.
5. What signal should be preserved?
The goal is not always to discard the entire claim. Ask:
- What observation started the argument?
- What experience gave it resonance?
- What possibility remains worth testing?
- Can the claim be rewritten without the unsupported transition?
Category Drift and Collapse into Nonsense
Category drift is one of the principal ways symbolic formation collapses into nonsense.
The initial material may be meaningful. The metaphor may illuminate. The statistic may be correct. The feeling may be genuine. The hypothesis may be worth pursuing.
The collapse into nonsense occurs when the relations between these elements are concealed or confused.
This is why nonsense can be fluent.
The symbols remain recognisable. The sentences remain grammatical. The story may be emotionally powerful. But the claim no longer remains answerable to the distinctions on which its apparent authority depends.
MoMo therefore asks not only:
Is this statement true?
It asks:
What kind of statement is it?
Where does its category change?
Has the transition been earned?
What signal remains when the drift is removed?
The purpose is not to imprison meaning inside fixed categories. It is to make movement between categories visible and responsible.
Symbolic literacy does not prevent us from moving between science, story, metaphor, ethics and lived experience.
It teaches us to know when we are crossing the water.
